Item Contribution of youth development fund-supported income generating activities to youth livelihoods in Morogoro municipality and Mvomero district, Tanzania(Sokoine University of Agriculture, 2021) John, ReginaThe extent to which - Youth Development Fund (YDF)-supported income-generating activities contributed to youth livelihoods among beneficiaries is unknown, although it is generally believed that -YDF has not managed to create employment opportunities among youth since its establishment in Tanzania. This study aimed at establishing how - YDF contributed to the improvement of youth livelihoods by examining the reasons behind the choices of income-generating activities that youth who are the beneficiaries of YDF are engaged in. The specific objectives were: i) To identify and characterize the YDF- supported income-generating activities that YDF recipients are engaged in; ii) To determine factors that influenced the choices youth make to engage in YDF-supported income-generating activities; iii) To assess the contribution of YDF-supported economic activities to youth livelihoods in terms of income, food security, and asset ownership of the YDF recipients; and iv) To assess the effect of YDF-supported economic activities in generating employment and strengthening community participation of the youth. Results show that most of the critical factors were not considered when youth were choosing the types of enterprises intending to engage in as YDF beneficiaries. However, YDF still has been shown to contribute to the livelihoods of youth at P ≤0.01, leaving other factors such as financial support from the family, friends, and personal saving constant. Finally, it was concluded that YDF has contributed to improving the livelihood of the youth beneficiaries of YDF. However, it is recommended that the sum of funds provided should reflect the enterprise selected by youth and more options on how funds can be accessed should be added, such as individual loans and equipment or machinery loans.Item Determinants of choices of the Income generating activities among youths beneficiaries of youth development fund in Morogoro municipality and Mvomero district in Tanzania(2021) John, Regina; Mattee, Amon Z.; Nyamba, Siwel Y.Being guided by the theory of reasoned action, this study sought to investigate factors that determined the choices of income-generating activities among youth beneficiaries of Youth Development Fund in Morogoro Municipality and Mvomero District Councils. The study employed cross-section designs where 200 respondents were involved. Multistage sampling techniques and simple random techniques were used to select the respondents involved in the study. Data were collected through questionnaires and interview schedules, and they were analysed through descriptive statistics and the Multinomial regression model. The findings show that factors that have influenced the choice of youth income generating activities among the youth include: attitudes, family, and friends support, customers and market availability, availability of skilled labour, low competition from a similar business, skills possession, and cooperation from others. However, these findings show that the factors did not influence all categories of choices and therefore the study recommends that the ministry responsible for youth should ensure that there is enough awareness created for youth on how the Community Development Department can make their business perform better. This should include training on how youth can have a proper choice by considering factors such as attitude, significant others, and skills possession.Item Determinants of choices of the Income Generating Activities among Youths beneficiaries of Youth Development Fund in Morogoro Municipality and Mvomero District in Tanzania(Tanzania Journal of Community Development, 2021-08-25) John, Regina; Mattee, Amon Z.; Nyamba, Siwel Y.Being guided by the theory of reasoned action, this study sought to investigate factors that determined the choices of income- generating activities among youth beneficiaries of Youth Development Fund in Morogoro Municipality and Mvomero District Councils. The interest of the study has been prompted by the recognition that local institutions are viewed as instrumental actors to farmers’ development but they face a number of problems which hinder them in performing their roles and responsibilities. Therefore it was necessary to have a systematic understanding of the roles of local institutions and how they can be scaled up to increase their impact. The study aimed to investigate the feasibility for scaling up local level rural institutions for sustainable land management in Lushoto District. It intended to explore three major objectives: To identify and characterize local institutions involved in agriculture or natural resource management that; to assess roles and capacity of local institutions in sustainable land management. Data were collected using a structured questionnaires with open ended and closed ended questions, research guide and interview checklist. A representative sample of 60 respondents from different farmers' groups and 5 key informants were drawn and interviewed. The Statistical Package for Social Science Software (SPSS) was employed for data analysis. From the findings it was observed that farmers’ groups or local institutions play a great role on management of natural resources and increase production through the use of different land management technologies. It was also observed that farmers’ groups have different roles that they perform in order to ensure the sustainability of their activities such as supporting training to the farmers, formulation of capital accumulation systems such as SACCOS etc. Different ways of scaling up these local institutions were recommended during the study by the farmers themselves, one of them being providing working equipment to farmers.
