Item Assessment of the impacts of community participation on the conservation of mangrove resources: A case study of Lindi district, Tanzania.(Sokoine University of Agriculture, 2001) Machumu,Milali ErnestThe word mangrove refers either to the plants of tropical intertidal forest communities or to the community itself (Semesi, 1991). Mangroves are trees and bushes growing below the high - water level of spring tides (FAO, 1982). "Mangrove" is a general term applied to an association of physiologically specialised plants inhabiting muddy swamps, creeks, deltas and sheltered sea coasts periodically inundated by tides (Banyikwa and Semesi, 1986). The trees are only one component of the complex mangrove ecosystem, which includes associated bodies of water, substrates as well as a variety of other plants, animals and micro-organisms (Semesi, 1986).
